We demand Ørsted (a.k.a. Deepwater Wind) not disturb a residential neighborhood (Wainscott) with its planned wind farm cable landing site when other less-impactful alternatives are available

  1. We strongly believe in energy conservation and alternative energy sources, including solar and wind
  2. Ørsted purposefully designed its Hither Hills State Park – Route B back-up option to be so unattractive in order to
    • Create the (false) perception that Wainscott is the ‘only’ choice
    • Maximize its profit as a developer
    • Arrogantly demonstrate that residents may be ignored
  1. Additional (real) alternatives have now been uncovered through independent environmental and transmission engineers that are better routes for the whole East Hampton community
    • Eliminate the need to build a new 2.5-acre substation at Cove Hollow Road (just outside the Village of East Hampton);
    • Shorten the overall cable route;
    • Fully eliminate the need for (or reduce by at least 61 percent) any new electrical rights of way (RoW) while maximizing use of existing commercial/industrial corridors, consistent with New York Public Service Commission guidance;
    • Avoid routing the transmission cable through downtown East Hampton;
    • Reduce residential impact by at least 31 percent and up to 63 percent based on multiple measures of residential impact as compared to Wainscott;
    • Shorten materially the offshore sea cable by between 10 percent to 19 percent and thereby reduce impact on recreation, fishing, and marine life; and
    • Eliminate potential emergency vehicle access issues, since the landfall sites for alternatives have 30-164 percent wider RoWs
  1. Running high-powered electric cables – think overhead power lines under your feet – at a popular family beach, throughout a residential neighborhood, and landing on a narrow residential lane is also unprecedented
    • Permanent cable landing infrastructure on land and in the in the shallow marine environment will affect our beach, wildlife (incl. piping plover, marine life) and community
    • It will forever alter our sole, undivided community and beach, which is already prone to erosion on its own (as we all see)
    • It risks giving such green energy projects a bad reputation for future development in New York State
  1. Town and Trustees, who are seeking money from Ørsted, have not fulfilled their fiduciary duty to hire independent experts, instead of relying on the public company’s self-serving fact base
  2. Wainscott itself is already shouldering a disproportionate set of burdens for our broader community. Examples include: (A) The Town had to declare a State of Emergency for water due to toxic chemicals from the airport. (B) We bear the brunt of noise and disturbance from the airport

We demand that the N.Y. State Public Service Commission, other state agencies, the Town Trustees and Town Board, and Federal agencies (including the Bureau of Ocean Management) not allow Deepwater to disturb Beach Lane and the Hamlet of Wainscott with its planned cable landing site
